Rajgir, India
I was visiting Sarnath, Bodh Gaya and Nalanda — key Buddhist sites in northern India — when I found myself in a small town of Rajgir because a kalchakra puja presided over by the Dalai Lama had attracted hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to Bodh Gaya making it difficult to find a place to stay. In Rajgir, I chanced on this intimate yet public square, encircled by modest cubic buildings with hints of temple decoration and walls in ordinary white chuna (lime plaster) and raw cement, transformed at dusk into shades of pale yellow and dusty terracotta and enlivened by a gentle stream of people running, circling, walking, stooping, and standing.
